PT Pindad Indonesia Collaborates with USA, Malaysian Military Expert Admits Envy

JakartaHerald.com - JakartaHerald.com reported that military expert Zaki Salleh from Malaysia openly admitted to being envious that his country did not have a successful defence company like Indonesia's PT Pindad. "This year, PT Pindad will celebrate its 41st anniversary.

Although the early history of this weapons company dates back to the 1950s, the official founding date of PT Pindad is considered to be April 29, 1983 when it was still state-owned.

The acronym Pindad stands for 'Perindustrian TNI Angkatan Darat', which was introduced in 1962 to replace the Army Equipment Factory (Pabal AD) established in 1958. Since 1983, PT Pindad has been established as a national company in order to move forward and not merely produce weapons for the military.

Like most small arms companies, PT Pindad manufactures weapons under license from the original company, in addition to producing various explosives and ammunition for the Indonesian military," explained Airtimes in their article.

Malaysia also took notice of PT Pindad's success in selling weapons. "In 1991, PT Pindad released the SS1 combat rifle based on the Belgian FN FAC weapon.

After 15 years, PT Pindad produced its own weapon, the first local rifle SS2-V1. They have now advanced to producing more modern weapons such as the SS2-V2 HB, SS2-V4 HB, and SS2-V4 A1. Since 2006, PT Pindad has been exporting weapons to countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates.

Not only weapons, PT Pindad also exports ammunition to South Korea, Singapore, East Timor, Laos, and the Philippines with an export value of US$5 million per year," stated Malaysian media.

"For the past two years, PT Pindad's management has targeted the company to be listed in the Top 100 Global Defence Companies by 2024 by offering high-quality and innovative product solutions. This ambition was evident when Indonesia formed a business entity known as Indonesian Defence Industry (DEFEND ID). PT Len Industri (Persero) serves as the parent company, with its subsidiaries including PT Pindad," explained Airtimes.

It is PT Pindad Indonesia's achievements that have left Malaysian military experts envious. "Seeing the success of our neighbouring country's defence industry raises many questions as to why a similar case has not occurred in Malaysia.

It is not that we lack protective measures for our companies, but to demonstrate the achievements of our national defence companies with such extensive capabilities. Why is that so?" wrote a sarcastic Malaysian media outlet.

Malaysia seems to be increasingly envious of PT Pindad Indonesia, especially as PT Pindad has secretly forged a partnership with the United States.

According to JakartaHerald.com, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia's Instagram account @kemenhanri posted on February 13, 2024, unveiling that during the SHOT Show 2024, the world's largest firearms industry exhibition held in Venetian Expo & Caesars Forum Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, PT Pindad signed an MoU with Terratek Usa Llc., for cooperation in manufacturing products, assembly, product licensing, brand partnerships, marketing, sales, and aftersales services, while showcasing various types of weapons including SS1-C, SP-1, SS Amphibious, SPR-2, SPR-4, SG-1, PM-1, and PM-3.

In conclusion, PT Pindad's success and international partnerships have certainly garnered attention from Malaysia and other countries in the region, showcasing Indonesia's growing influence in the global defence industry.
